Just like most things in life, appearances can be deceiving. The same can be said with flooring. At first glance it may all look the same, but when you peel back the surface, literally, you’ll see the difference.
As you glance at our great selection of vinyl plank flooring at Southside you’ll love the colors, styles, prices, and options. Depending on the use of your flooring you’ll also want to dig a little deeper and take a look at the “wear layer”. The wear layer is the layer that is hidden between the floor design and the actual finish. Just like a book, a stronger exterior or a hardback book will protect the pages much more than a paperback book. The same is true with the wear layer. The thicker the wear layer, the more protected your flooring will be.
Mil is not ml. One very confusing part about wear layers is that the measurements are expressed in mils. Mil is an imperial measurement that means thousandths of an inch. It’s not to be confused with ml, which is the metric abbreviation for milliliter.
For commercial flooring or in a high traffic area, the mil layer of 20 or above will last longer than a mil of 6 to 12 mil. Most of the flooring at Southside is 12 mil or above, unlike many of the big box stores.
Of course our professionals at Southside are trained to help you sort the apples from oranges, or in our case the fine details in our different flooring options. Stop in today and let us help you pick out the perfect flooring for your space, one layer at a time.
