Shingles: Your First Line of Defense Against the Weather

glacier architectural shingles (3)

At first glance, a bundle of shingles is unremarkable. Don’t be fooled. When it comes to protecting your home from the unpredictable forces of nature, shingles play a crucial role as the first line of defense. These unassuming roofing materials do more than just enhance the aesthetic appeal of your house; they provide a robust barrier against the elements, making you more comfortable, safe, and helping to prolong the life of your home.

Rain Rain, Go Away. Shingles are designed to channel water away from your roof’s surface and direct it into the gutters and downspouts. This prevents water from seeping under your house. Without this efficient drainage system, your roof and attic could become vulnerable to leaks, rot, and mold growth.

A Shelter in the Storm. Strong winds can lift and dislodge poorly installed or damaged shingles, leaving your roof exposed. Quality shingles, when properly installed and maintained, form a barrier against wind and flying debris. With our capricious North Carolina weather, that’s something we need!

Too Hot. Too Cold. We don’t often think of how much shingles help in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures. Their insulating qualities help to balance indoor temperatures by minimizing heat transfer between the exterior and interior of the house. During hot weather, asphalt shingles reflect the sun’s radiant heat. In the winter, they act as an additional layer of insulation, helping to prevent warmth from escaping the house.

Hail! Hail! Hailstorms can wreak havoc on unprotected roofs. Shingles are designed to withstand the force of hailstones, minimizing the risk of damage during hailstorms, sleet, and freezing rain.

To keep your shingles doing their job, you need to maintain and inspect your shingles regularly. Look for damaged or missing shingles. Winter is a great time to inspect your roof and make sure it’s ready to be the first line of defense for your home and your family. If you find your roof needs repair or replacement, come to Southside! Shingles are your first line of defense against the weather, and Southside is the first place to shop for shingles!
