Smell that Pumpkin Spice? Yep. It’s fall, now. Colder weather is the next cloud over, and it’s time to get your house ready to meet the season. We’ve already given you some hints about your home’s exterior, but you’ve got some inside jobs to do as well.
Service the Furnace. Schedule an appointment with your HVAC company to do a service call. Then change the filter, but you already do that monthly – right?!. Vacuum out your vents, and make sure that nothing obstructs them or the air flow.
Sweep the Chimney. Clean your fireplace, then use a flashlight and a mirror to look up into your chimney. If you see blockages, holes, or cracks, call a chimney professional. You also need to call if you see a buildup of soot above the damper.
Put Your Plants to Sleep. Bring in your outdoor plants. Some can be placed in your cellar or attic for a long winter’s nap.
No Filter Left Behind. We’ve already mentioned your furnace, take a look around at other appliances, too. Anything that has a filter needs to be changed periodically, so don’t forget!
Time for Change. While you’re at it, test and change the batteries in your smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors.
Insulated Houses. This is a great time of year to add insulation your home. Pipes, windows, attics, water heaters, even your outlet and switch plates can be insulated.
Warm Programming. Invest in a programmable thermostat, so that your heat automatically adjusts to the times that you need – or don’t need – it most. You’ll probably recoup the cost of the thermostat in the very first year!
